Title: New Video format in 1.94 warning for 1.90 users
Post by: DJ Ray on June 23, 2017, 09:22:57 AM
The new VP9 video format is fantastic, smaller and great quality, HOWEVER... Ots files encoded with this new format are not backward compatible. Version 1.90 will not play them, so if you are like me and have several copies of Ots you will have to upgrade the lot. Not Happy.
Please somebody tell me I am wrong.
I've been waiting so long for Ots to support other formats and now its finally here, it looks like its going to be expensive.

Welcome to the forum.
To me, it was obvious that the enhancements incorporated into 1.94 were not available in 1.90. These are improvements to the original capabilities of the software, and therefore, should be paid for (unless you bought in on the "free upgrades to version 2"). It also stands to reason that, if a new format came out or matured since 1.90, that version wouldn't "know" about it.

Is that also true for just importing WAV or MP3 files in the new Studio?
I just did a bunch, but did not yet have the time to import these in OTSAV...
Will they play? Or should I redo them in the previous studio version?

WAV and MP3 import were part of the capabilities of 1.90, so you should be fine. It is only if you try to play something which is part of the upgrade (e.g. VP9 format video) which will not be compatible with 1.90.

Yes, I can now confirm that as long as you import the old already supported formats, you're fine. Works great.

This was obvious to me as well! The old Ots versions did not have this support for the new formats, so just how were they to know how to read them???

It is simply an assumption, but I suspect the old versions of Ots will open the files, and simply ignore what it doesn't know how to read. Therefore it should not crash Ots, but simply not read the "foreign" item chunks.

Hi Jeff,

Your assumption is exactly correct. Older versions of OtsAV will ignore chunks they do not understand, while handling any other chunks they do understand within the Ots file. The Ots format was elegantly designed this way so you could still play newer Ots files in older versions as long as the chunk types you were trying to use were supported in that older version. Therefore new Ots files with MP3 based audio chunks will play fine in older versions of OtsAV.
